Effective fluoride and dental sealant treatment
In addition to developing healthy teeth brushing and flossing habits, adding children’s fluoride treatment to your child’s routine is important to prevent cavities and other diseases such as gingivitis.
Fluoride is also important for stopping tooth decay in its tracks. Fluoride is important at blocking acids that are found in everyday food and drink items from dissolving the teeth.
Our dentists can recommend a fluoride treatment that is appropriate for your child’s teeth. Let your child have a beautiful healthy smile at all ages. Make an appointment at Eastfield Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics today!
Active sealant treatment for your kids
Dental sealant treatments are recommended for children who may be more susceptible to tooth decay. While they are not a magic bullet treatment that would completely stop tooth decay, they can be particularly effective at stopping tooth decay in children.
Dental sealants are acrylic-like materials that shield common forms of bacteria from infecting and damaging the rear teeth. We recommend typically installing sealants to the back teeth about the same time as the rear molars are fully developed. This is typically around six years of age. Our dentists will base their recommendation on sealants on your child’s susceptibility to tooth decay and how your child’s teeth have grown and developed while the tooth was below the gum line.
Caring for your sealants
Installing sealants is a painless process. A solution is applied to the chewing surface of the tooth. This helps bond the condition tooth’s enamel more effectively so the sealant can be applied. After this, the tooth is washed and dried the sealant is applied. In some cases, it will be applied with a special brush and in others, ultraviolet light will help bond the sealant.
The procedure typically takes only a few minutes. Sealants can last for many years, or at least until the tooth falls out and is replaced by the permanent teeth. Sealants are only applied to certain teeth and they cannot be employed to the spaces between your child’s teeth. This is where regular brushing and flossing can help.
It is recommended that after a sealant is installed to avoid certain foods like hard pretzels, hard candy, and very sticky food. So as not to accidentally dislodge the sealant. If a sealant becomes dislodged, it may not even be noticed until your child’s next dental visit.
