Overcoming barriers together
One of the main challenges facing children with special needs is that they are often unable to engage in the level of self-care that their peers do. Often teaching the basics of teeth brushing can be difficult, but our team can work with parents and caregivers in working with special needs kids that can reduce barriers and help these amazing children get the care that they require.
When you make an appointment with us our dentists will engage in a comprehensive five-step process to outline the level of care that is required.
- Determine patient’s abilities by asking them to demonstrate how they would brush their teeth – and provide specific recommendations based on the results.
- Provide hands-on demonstration that shows parents and caregivers on the best way to brush their children’s teeth.
- Modify toothbrush handles to facilitate ease of use.
- Provide other dental aides such as floss holders and unique toothbrushes
- Recommend preventative fluoride treatments in addition to antimicrobial’s to support patient’s oral health.
Establishing trust between doctors and patients
Trust is an important factor in setting a grounded relationship between doctors and patients. Often children with special needs have to feel that they are in a safe environment before they can communicate to the doctor. Special needs children may also be susceptible to sights and sounds that can prove to be overwhelming and serve as an additional barrier.
Eastfield Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics strives to provide a comfortable environment that can minimize stress so that kids with special needs can feel safe and receive the care they need.
Comprehensive care past, present, and future
One of the most important factors in developing treatments for special needs children is understanding their complete medical history. Often their condition, medications, and any development milestones should be discussed with our dentists so that they can understand how to develop a comprehensive care plan for your child.
Certain medications can lead to tooth decay and lead to problems with the proper development of your child’s teeth.
We can also provide recommendations that make dental care easier for parents and caregivers. Our office is here to help your child get the care they need to be healthy at every stage of their lives. Stop in and visit our office today!
